“As You Like It,” William Shakespeare’s light-hearted look at forbidden romance, will premiere at Bergen Community College.
The play, directed by Mary Clifford of Highland Lakes, will be performed in the Anna Maria Ciccone Theatre on the College’s main campus at 400 Paramus Road, in Paramus. Performances are scheduled for Thursdays through Saturdays on the weekends of April 14 through 16 and April 21 through 23 at 7:30 p.m., with additional Saturday performances at 3 p.m.
The play’s main character Rosalind is the daughter of a banished duke, who falls in love with Orlando, a disinherited son of one of the duke’s friends. Rosalind is banished from the court by her uncle and travels with her cousin to the Forest of Arden, where her father and friends live in exile. The young women encounter a magical world of friendly outlaws and learn important life lessons about love, aging and death. By the end of the play, Rosalind will make an important decision about her future with Orlando, and her father’s fate will be determined, which will impact the entire kingdom.
