The BioLume™ Garage Fixture Submitted for LIGHTFAIR International's Prestigious Innovation Award

EverLast® Lighting's Energy-Efficient, Biologically-Friendly Hybrid Lighting System

In preparation for the industry's largest annual architectural and commercial lighting tradeshow, EverLast® Lighting submitted its new energy-efficient and biologically-friendly BioLume™ Garage Fixture for LIGHTFAIR International's exclusive Innovation Awards.

The BioLume™ Garage Fixture is the first installment in a new series of patented bi-level hybrid fixtures that integrate a 5000K induction lamp and amber LEDs with SMART sensor controls to provide biologically sensitive, dark-sky friendly, and energyefficient lighting. When an area is vacant, amber-colored LEDs emit biologically-friendly light. When the sensor is triggered by motion, the induction lamp turns on to provide bright white light for enhanced security.
Developed in partnership with the California Lighting Technology Center (CLTC) at UC Davis and EverLast® Lighting, the BioLume™ Series was inspired by the increasing concern within the industry that certain light levels at night may result in biological disturbances or imbalances to certain species due to the hormonal stimulation that occurs with shorter wavelengths corresponding to typical high color temperature light sources.
"There is a growing body of research that indicates human circadian rhythm is greatly affected by shorter wavelengths in the visible spectrum." stated Prof. Michael Siminovitch, Director of CLTC at UC Davis. "These shorter wavelengths can reduce the production of melatonin, a hormone that affects sleep cycle and other physical responses."
Research has shown that the total amount of light flux entering the sky and disrupting natural wildlife in areas adjacent to parking structures and area lighting complexes can have a disruptive effect on wildlife in a similar manner to what is currently being studied with humans. The fixture is predicted to operate in within the amber part of the spectrum at a greatly reduced intensity, away from the critical action spectrum in terms of hormonal response for humans and other mammals, reptiles, and birds for 50 to 75% of the hours of operation.
Due to the incorporation of bi-level occupancy sensor controls that manage the 5000K induction lamp and amber-colored LEDs, the BioLume™ Garage Fixture provides energy-efficient and biologically-friendly light without jeopardizing pedestrian safety.
