Stop & Shop Donates 20,000 Turkeys To Local Food Banks In The Northeast

Turkey Express Program Kicks Off Just in Time for the Holidays

The Stop & Shop Supermarket Company LLC kicks off its annual Turkey Express program with a donation of 20,000 turkeys to local area hunger relief organizations throughout the Northeast starting today through Thanksgiving.  The Turkey Express program is one of several company-led initiatives to combat hunger in the region.

Stop & Shop around the New York Metro region:

On Long Island, U.S. Marines who served in Iraq and Afghanistan will help unload     1700 turkeys that Stop & Shop is donating to Island Harvest and Long Island Cares at the Island Harvest Long Island Distribution Center on Thursday, November 17th at 11:00 am. The Marines say they hope their efforts will lead others to help Island Harvest and Long Island Cares meet the needs of the hungry in this difficult economic period.

According to Long Island Cares, 320,000 people on Long Island are impacted by hunger and food insecurity, including 118,500 children.

• 39% of the members of households served by Island Harvest and Long Island
Cares are children under 18 years old.
• 10% of the members of households are children under 5 years of age.
• 4% of the members of households are elderly.
• 48% of households include at least one employed adult.
• 63% have incomes below the federal poverty level during the previous month.
• 6% are homeless.
This year Stop & Shop is expanding the Turkey Express program on Long Island, NY by offering an opportunity where customers can pick up a pre-packaged bag of all the trimmings valued at $7.50 and a portion of the proceeds benefits Island Harvest, Long Island’s largest hunger relief organization.  The bag of trimmings consists of Stop & Shop’s Own Brand stuffing mix, canned corn, cranberry sauce, fruit cocktail, turkey gravy and cut yams.  The Trimmings Bag campaign runs from now till December 30th and will offer families a traditional holiday dinner.

In New Jersey, NY Giants Wide Receiver Hakeem Nicks will respond to a call for emergency assistance from the Community Food Bank of New Jersey on Tuesday, November 15th at 1 pm. He will help unload 1500 turkeys that Stop & Shop is donating to the Hillside based Food Bank.

According to the Community Food Bank of New Jersey:
• There are 1.6 million New Jersey residents eligible to receive food assistance through the state’s emergency food distribution system.
• 8.5% of the state’s population and 11.8 percent of children live in poverty.
• 40% of the households in New Jersey receiving emergency food assistance reported having to choose between paying for food or paying for their utilities, rents and mortgage bills.

Nicks, who grew up in Charlotte, North Carolina says he and his family occasionally benefited from meals provided by food banks and food pantries while he was growing up. Nicks is a graduate of Independence High School in Charlotte, where 39% of the students qualify for free federal lunch, twice the North Carolina State average.

In Neptune, New Jersey Members of the Monmouth County Community Emergency Response Team (CERT), who helped protect their friends and neighbors when Hurricane Irene ravaged New Jersey will again step forward to offer their assistance as the FoodBank of Monmouth & Ocean Counties responds to an unprecedented need for emergency  food assistance. The CERT members will help unload 1500 turkeys that   Stop & Shop is donating to the Food Bank on Thursday, November 10th at 11:00 a.m.

According to the FoodBank of Monmouth & Ocean Counties:
• Over 100,000 people in Monmouth & Ocean Counties live on incomes that put them at risk of hunger at some time each month.
• 40% of them are children, 10% are elderly.

• A family of four needs an annual income of between $62,000 and $69,000 to be self sufficient in Monmouth or Ocean Counties, but 20% of Monmouth County and 28% of Ocean County households earn less than $35,000 annually.

“Stop & Shop is pleased to be of assistance to the food banks and food pantries that provide for those in the tri-state area in need of emergency provisions,” said Arlene Putterman, Manager of Public and Community Relations at Stop & Shop New York Metro Division.  “We are appreciative of the assistance from the U.S. Marines, the New York Giants and the Emergency Service and grateful to the volunteers who help us deliver our donations to those who find themselves food challenged during this holiday season.”
Stop & Shop donates over $12 million in product and financial support to individual food banks. In addition to the Turkey Express program, Stop & Shop continues to fight hunger through the Food for Friends campaign, which will raise more than $2 million this year for more than 300 local hunger relief organizations.  Now through December 8th, customers can donate $1, $3 or $5 at their local Stop & Shop to help support hundreds of local hunger relief organizations across the Northeast.
