Congressman Rothman’s Statement on the Joint Select Committee on Deficit Reduction

Today, Congressman Steve Rothman (D-NJ), member of the House Appropriations Committee, released the following statement:
I am disappointed that the Joint Select Committee on Deficit Reduction was unable to come to a bipartisan agreement. I have supported efforts toward a grand bargain that would have significantly lowered our nation’s mounting deficit, but unfortunately there was a wide difference of opinion on how deficit reduction should be achieved.

What America needs is a common sense solution to deficit reduction that reflects the values and views of the American people: cutting wasteful spending, closing tax loopholes, ending subsidies for big oil and big agriculture, making the wealthiest of Americans pay their fair share in taxes, and, where necessary, additional shared sacrifice to address our nation’s debt and deficit. The Republican members of the Committee rejected this approach.
