Menendez Congratulates NJ Police Officers Who Will be Honored by President Obama at White House Ceremony

On Saturday, May 12, 2012, New Jersey officers Rachel Morgan and Ryan Hayo of the Paramus Police Department will be among the honorees at the 2012 National Association of Police Organizations (NAPO) TOP COPS award ceremony at the White House. Last February, Officer Morgan was shot three times by a man who had been fleeing from her and subsequently crashed. Even after being hit, Morgan remained calm and returned the suspect’s fire. Officer Hayo arrived at the scene and after containing the threat, dragged his fellow officer to safety. For this, the two are receiving the award for their unwavering courage in the line of duty.

“My sincerest congratulations go out to Officers Morgan and Hayo, and after hearing their story, I can’t think of any individuals more worthy of the honor being bestowed upon them,” Menendez said. “The bravery and professionalism they showed in the most desperate of situations proves that New Jersey’s finest are the best of the best. I am always proud to represent the Garden state, but I am especially proud to come from a state with such heroes protecting us all. On behalf of the entire state, thank you for your courage and service.”
NAPO TOP COPS Awards pay tribute to outstanding law enforcement officers across the country for actions above and beyond the call of duty. TOP COPS awardees are nominated by their fellow officers for outstanding service during the preceding calendar year. The TOP COPS are selected by an Awards Selection Committee comprised of national law enforcement representatives who choose one TOP COPS case from each state and U.S. territory.
Menendez has been a leading advocate in the Senate for increased investment in public safety.
