In Personal Tale, Business Owner Explains Difficulties Taking Over Family Distributorship

Sam W. McQuade became a top beer distributor by challenging his dad over how to run the show in “Hostile Takeover: How to (And Not To) Transition to the Next Generation”

In “Hostile Takeover: How to (And Not To) Transition to the Next Generation” (ISBN 1477512578), Sam W. McQuade offers his frank testimony about what it means to take over a family business and pass it on to the next generation. In what he calls an oedipal struggle with his father, McQuade took over a family beer distributorship after the tragic death of his brother. What came next was not reconciliation but business warfare, waged by a father against his own son.

After the death of McQuade’s brother in an auto accident, the author left his established professional life in Colorado to assume his kin’s reign in North Dakota. Father and son agreed to a pact over how the business would be run. “I kept my part of the pact, Dad reneged on his, resulting in an Oedipus struggle that ended in figurative bloodshed between the two of us,” says McQuade.
McQuade recounts the story of how he and his father would come to blows over the direction of the business. Defying his father’s predictions, he eventually took over the distributorship, winning brewer Anheuser-Busch’s top award 10 years in a row.
He uses his personal story as a jumping-off point for understanding the pains and problems inherent in generational family business transitions. “Most that is written about business is either theory or the latest fad. That is not this book,” says McQuade. “This is the real story of a family business and the dos and not-to-dos from my own hard-knock experiences.”
McQuade’s guide will appeal to anyone involved in a small family business who is looking to transition the operation to the next generation with a minimal amount of pain and strife. It will appeal to both business owners as well as the person being groomed to succeed. Earnest and personal, “Hostile Takeover” addresses the family business with light humor and brutal honesty in equally, enlightening measures.
“Hostile Takeover: How to (And Not To) Transition to the Next Generation” is available for sale online at Amazon.com and other channels.
