The mixed messages surrounding the resignation of Gary Mead, the Department of Homeland Security official in charge of immigration enforcement and removal operations, raises important questions about the policy priorities that lead to the jailing of hundreds of thousands of immigrants in the first place.
“The confusion around the resignation of Department of Homeland Security official Gary Mead reflects the larger confusion about the policies that result in hundreds of thousands of immigrants being jailed,” said Ana Perez, Campaign Director of Presente.org. “Immigrants without criminal records should never been incarcerated in the first place. This is wasting millions of tax dollars and is devasting our communities. Jailing immigrants with no criminal record is not in the interest of national security and should be abolished immediately.”
