Paramus Sunrise Rotary Welcomes Its 6th President; Sophie Stone

Paramus Sunrise Rotary Installation Night
Regally dressed in clothes native to her original home of Burma/Myanmar, Sophie Stone was installed as the sixth President of the Paramus Sunrise Rotary Club. Past Rotary International Director Ray Wells did the honors and was belatedly honored by the club for his efforts in getting the necessary paraphernalia for the fledgling club five years ago. Ray, a member of the Paramus Rotary Club, was inducted as an Honorary Member of the Paramus Sunrise Rotary Club by Past President Mukesh Malkan who also served as Master of Ceremonies.

Paramus Sunrise Rotary Installation Night
Current President Joe Castelano welcomed everyone. The attendees were Rotarians, family and friends of Rotarians. Father Panagiotis (Peter) Lekkas was invited to say the invocation and Pastor Dr. Samuel M.  Stone was asked to recite the 4Way Test. There was a break in the routine to welcome Bergen County Executive Kathe Donovan, recently recovered from major surgery. Kathe gave Commendations to both outgoing President Joe Castelano and to incoming President Sophie Stone. In a sense, it was old home week for Kathe since she,  Ray and Betty, his wife, went to high school together. Kathe was touched when Sophie presented her with a bouquet of flowers.

Other Commendations were from NJ State Senator Bob Gordon, Assemblywoman Connie Wagner and Assemblyman Tim Eustace. These were presented by Mukesh Malkan. Paramus Sunrise member Joe D'Arco doubled as his day job, Paramus Borough Administrator, to present the two presidents with Commendations from Mayor Rich LaBarbiera.

President Joe Castelano awarded his Board of Directors with beautiful rosewood desk pen sets  and recognized several key people who had contributed to the club's success during his year. Joe received his first membership in the Paul Harris Fellowship joining several of his club members who have attained that high honor. Among those singled out for recognition by Joe were: Sophie Stone, Mukesh Malkan Janet Pomante, Sharon Maloney and Honorary Member Tina Apprich who not only carried 100% attendance, but was always eager to help in the club's endeavors. Bassam Mhich of Bergen Town Center was presented with his co-Rotarian of the Year earlier at the Club Fashion Show. This was done because his co-recipient, Deb Mattes had resigned her position at Westfield Garden State Plaza Shopping Center and had to leave the area early to a new position in the Chicago, Illinois area.

Newly inducted President Sophie Stone, in her address to the group, stated that her major International Service Project will be dedicated to Burma/Myanmar . She will be trying to start an  Interact Club there, a Dictionary project and the Gift of Life. She also started off her year by sponsoring two new PSRC members, Kit Wong-Khoo and Karine Abrahamyan who were inducted by PRID Ray Wells. New members are the key to a club's strength!

In a small club like Paramus Sunrise Rotary, everyone is assigned duties and get to know each other. This is the case with PSRC where friendship is pursued. In addition to those mentioned above, the following members were in attendance, a * indicating Charter Member: Bob Sherwood, *PP Gary Spivak, *Hemish Kapedia, *Mel Fabrikant, Mike Molin, Sharon Maloney, *Tom Wells  and *Mike Yeun. Other Charter Members in attendance were: Sophie Stone,  Father Peter and Mukesh Malkan.

This year's Installation Dinner was held at The Assembly Steak House in Englewood Cliffs which was posh, but surprisingly affordable. It lived up to its name of elegance; the hors d'oeuvres were delicious and varied( no pigs in a blanket) and the sumptuous and pretty buffet satisfied our vegetarians as well as the gourmets.
