NJBankers & Lusitania Savings Bank team up to repair Sandy-damaged homes

ORADELL, NJ, September 14, 2015 – It has been almost three years since Superstorm Sandy. Many have forgotten about the storms and its effects, but not members of the New Jersey Bankers Association (NJBankers). For the third year in a row, the NJBankers can be found on a Habitat worksite continuing to help repair damaged homes. This year, the President and CEO and his senior management team joined forces with Lusitania Savings Bank to work in Little Ferry and Hackensack on two homes damaged by Superstorm Sandy with Habitat for Humanity of Bergen County (Habitat Bergen). The skilled volunteers spent the day framing and painting.

The “Bankers Build” program, which began in June, will continue through the fall as Habitat Bergen welcomes more banks to its job sites.

“New Jersey bankers have a strong commitment to the communities they serve and “Bankers Build” is just one more way to support their neighbors. Many in their communities still need help recovering from the effects of Superstorm Sandy. The NJBankers team proudly joined Lusitania Savings Bank to rebuild, renovate, and support those still in need,” said John E. McWeeney, Jr., NJBankers President and CEO.

“Working with Habitat Bergen and the New Jersey Bankers Association as part of the ‘Bankers Build’ program was a truly gratifying experience for our employees and a wonderful opportunity for Lusitania to directly support the communities we serve," said Jorge S. Gomes, Lusitania Savings Bank President/CEO.

“NJBankers and its associate members, which include Lusitania Savings Bank, have been invaluable contributors to our Sandy Restoration Program this summer,” said Jacey Raimondo, Habitat Bergen Executive Director. “NJBankers has an established history working with Habitat for Humanity affiliates throughout New Jersey and it is gratifying to see their associate members making a direct impact in communities in which they live, work and play. Through the Bankers Build program, volunteers from banks throughout the Bergen County area will donate close to 900 hours of their time to help families repair their homes.  The ‘Bankers Build’ program has far exceeded our expectations and we look forward to continuing our partnership with the NJBankers.”

About Habitat for Humanity of Bergen County

The goal of Habitat Bergen is to eliminate poverty housing and homelessness from the face of the earth by working in partnership with people in need.  Using volunteer labor and donated funds and materials, Habitat Bergen builds or rehabilitates simple, decent houses and sells them to low-income families at cost, but with no interest added. Habitat Bergen is a people-to-people partnership, which joins all of us together regardless of race, nationality, religion, or socioeconomic status. That partnership begins with the homeowner families (partner families).  Habitat Bergen is not a giveaway program, but a joint venture in which those who benefit from the housing ministry are involved in the work at various levels. They help with the construction of their own home, as well as the houses of their neighbors.
