16TH ANNUAL PANASONIC NEW YORK CITY TRIATHLON SUNDAY, JULY 24


4,000 Triathletes to Swim, Bike and Run through Manhattan in New York’s only International Distance Triathlon

NEW YORK (June 27, 2016) — 4,000 athletes will take to the river, roads and parks of Manhattan to compete in the 16th annual Panasonic New York City Triathlon on Sunday, July 24. The event is produced by Life TimeSM – The Healthy Way of Life Company, which recently opened its first New York City location, Life Time Athletic at Sky. The nearly 70,000 square-foot, multi-level fitness destination is an unparalleled, resort-style health, fitness and lifestyle experience introducing New Yorkers to Life Time’s unique and individualized approach to fitness.

Part of the 2016 Life Time Tri Series, which includes 11 triathlons across the country between April and September, the Panasonic New York City Triathlon is the only International distance triathlon in New York City. The race includes Pros, ParaTriathletes (physically challenged) and Age Group athletes ranging in age from 18 to 78 and representing 44 states and 40 countries. Participants will swim 1.5 kilometers (.93 miles) in the Hudson River, bike 40 kilometers (24.85 miles) on the Henry Hudson Parkway, and run 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) in Central Park. Pro athletes will kick off the race by jumping into the Hudson at 5:50 a.m. The winner is expected to cross the finish line in Central Park at 7:30 a.m.

“New York has an energy unlike any other city and the athletes who compete here encompass the same vigor and drive,” said Kimo Seymour, Senior Vice President of Life Time Media and Events. “The Life Time Tri Series is all about creating amazing race experiences, and it does not get more amazing than swimming in the Hudson and biking and running through New York City’s parks. I can’t wait to see what race day brings.” 

Race weekend will kick off with the beloved annual NYC Tri Diaper Derby, when future triathletes will crawl to victory during “the slowest two minutes in sports” the afternoon of Friday, July 22. On Friday night, 500 triathletes – wearing nothing but their undergarments – will run 1.7-miles through Central Park during the Gildan Underwear Run. Sunday’s NYC Triathlon will host the annual Animal Medical Center Doggy Dash where canine competitors and their human partners will run five miles finishing under the Triathlon’s main finish line.

A total of $30,000 in prize money will be awarded to the winners in the male and female pro categories. For the fifth consecutive year, the Accenture Challenged Athletes International Championship will also be held during Panasonic New York City Triathlon. This race format allows all five Paratriathlon classes to compete against one another, providing a larger field of competition with $7,500 in prize money awarded to the top five male and female finishers.
