Federal Government Certifies Bergen County’s Elimination of Homelessness Among Veterans

(Hackensack, NJ) – Bergen County Executive Jim Tedesco announces that Bergen County has become the first county in New Jersey to have its successful efforts to end homelessness among veterans certified by the U.S. Interagency Council on Homelessness, a partnership between the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

“The men and women who have so bravely served our country deserve more than just our deepest gratitude,” said County Executive Tedesco.  They deserve to live securely and prosperously in our communities.  That security starts with a roof over their heads.  I’m so proud that our federal partners have recognized Bergen County’s efforts to ensure that every veteran has access to safe, affordable housing.”

“As a veteran myself, I know that my brothers and sisters in arms often face difficult challenges when they return home,” said Bergen County Division of Veterans Services Director A.J. Luna. “It is an honor to help veterans in crisis by assisting them in finding a stable home environment.  This victory provides a solid foundation that supports the work we do for all veterans to help them achieve their educational and professional dreams.”

"Our mission at The Bergen County Housing, Health, and Human Services Center is to provide needed services to individuals and families in Bergen County who are homeless or at risk of homelessness,” said Julia Orlando, Director of the Housing, Health, and Human Services Center.  “Through our commitment to the goals of this important initiative, Bergen County has prioritized and improved its homelessness response for Veterans. Ensuring a Housing First framework throughout the system, utilizing evidence-based tools for triaging the needs of identified Veterans and making both rapid re-housing and permanent supportive housing resources available, these systems have been streamlined to help a veteran experiencing homelessness to quickly secure and maintain permanent housing.  In this way, we are honoring the service of Bergen County’s Veterans and I couldn’t be prouder.”

"Bergen County’s achievement proves that leadership matters in our urgent work to end homelessness in this country,” said Matthew Doherty, executive director of the U.S. Interagency Council on Homelessness. “When committed leaders come together around proven strategies, it’s no longer a question of if we can end homelessness, but how soon.”

“New Jersey’s leaders and homeless service providers enthusiastically embraced the Mayors Challenge to End Veterans Homelessness from the start,” said Holly Leicht, HUD Regional Administrator for New York and New Jersey. “With today’s announcement that Bergen County is the first place in the state to officially achieve this goal, we are seeing the results of those commitments.  Even more importantly, New Jersey’s veterans are seeing the results:  there are 20% fewer homeless veterans today than just a year ago. Through collaboration and investment at all levels of government, combined with the ‘boots on the ground,’ day-to-day commitment of Bergen County Housing and other local organizations, New Jersey is following the roadmap that has led to a 50% decline in veteran homelessness across the country since 2010.”
