Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey Honors Military members and their Families on National POW/MIA Recognition Day

(Newark, NJ, Sept. 16, 2016) – America’s Prisoners of War (POWs) and military members Missing in Action (MIA) were honored with a special ceremony today which is National POW/MIA Recognition day. In a historic fist for Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey (Horizon BCBSNJ), company executives joined with Horizon BCBSNJ Military Affinity Group (MAG) members to raise a POW/MIA flag beneath the American flag outside the company’s Newark, NJ headquarters.

“Support for missing Americans and their families is felt deeply across the nation, in the Garden State and here at Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey,” said Kevin P. Conlin, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer for Horizon BCBSNJ. “We feel it’s extremely important to honor and recognize America’s POWs/MIAs and to give everyone present the opportunity to reflect on the sacrifices made by members of our Armed Forces that enable us to enjoy our freedom.”

The U.S. Congress passed a resolution authorizing National POW/MIA Recognition Day to be observed on July 18, 1979. In 1986, the day was moved to the third Friday of September. It is one of six days that the POW/MIA flag can be flown. The POW/MIA flag was first recognized by public law in 1990.

“Today, we honor the women and men of our Armed Forces who keep our country safe through there selfless acts of honor and courage,” said Douglas Falduto, Vice president of Administration and Chief Security Officer for Horizon BCBSNJ and MAG’s Executive Sponsor. “We pay tribute to those patriots and we must also recognize the pain that remains with the families whose loved ones have not returned home.”

Today’s flag raising ceremony had never been performed at the Horizon BCBSNJ grounds before.
