In 2014 there were 9.6 million cases worldwide which includes 1.6 million deaths. TB is a leading killer of people infected with HIV. In the U.S. 9,421 cases were reported in 2014 and the Center for Disease Control reported this year that the numbers are rising for the first time in 23 years. The disease is treatable with antibiotics said Dr. Reichman but the course of treatment can be long and complicated. Dr. Reichman is the Executive Director Emeritus at Rutgers Global Tuberculosis Institute. His main concern was that the funds needed to fight the disease - about $8.5bn - are simply not available due to cutbacks by government agencies. It is important that the general public be aware of the rising numbers of TB cases and learn how they can help. Much more can be learned at: www.globaltb.njms.rutgers.edu
