Summer Weather Facts

Heat is the leading weather-related cause of death in the United States, resulting in hundreds of fatalities each year.

With an outside temperature of 80 degrees, it only takes one hour for the temperature inside a car to reach a deadly 123 degrees.

A storm is classified as a tropical storm when its sustained winds reach 39 mph; it becomes a hurricane when the sustained winds reach 74 mph.

Storms with winds above 74 mph are called "hurricanes" in the Atlantic and East Pacific oceans, "typhoons" in the West Pacific Ocean, and "cyclones" in the Indian and South Pacific Oceans.

The energy from one bolt of lightning can light a 100-watt light bulb for more than three months.
