Paramus Profiles - Jeffrey A. Levine

A visit to the Fire Prevention Bureau brought me face to face with Jeff Levine, its Director , Chief Fire Inspector, fire sub-code official and fire official. After a very pleasant chat pertaining to fire alarms, fire and smoke, Jeff graciously agreed to an interview for www.ParamusPost.com.

He started in his profession as a volunteer fireman many years ago. When, in 1986, a position opened in the Fire Prevention Bureau? he applied for and got the job. Although he had been exposed to fire conditions under duress, he now started to learn about the many intricacies from the cure and prevention aspect.

His job now consists of reviewing residential and commercial construction drawings for compliance with New Jersey?s adopted fire codes, as well as checking new construction, fire protection, sprinkler systems, alarms, exit and emergency lighting and renovations. This requires closely working with the Building Department which is now under the guidance of his former boss, Bill Lynn.

His department also practices fire prevention techniques conducting routine maintenance, and inspections of malls, commercial buildings, nursing homes and many other public venues. To do this, he is assisted by three full time inspectors, Kevin J. Sheehan, Fire and Mechanical Inspector, Scott M. Pordon, Inspector and Fire Safety Education Specialist and Inspector Joseph J. Smaha along with part timer Gary Mullay. In addition, he has the very capable Jean Payoczkowski, longtime secretary to the office. Jeff is looking for one more full time inspector to help fill the gap created by Bill Lynn?s promotion.

At home, he is assisted by full time wife, Maura and enjoys just about all sports. These days, he prefers to watch rather than participate.
