Paramus Incident - Barricaded Subject

On 11/22/11 at 1106 hours Paramus PD received a phone call from a worker in the professional building located at 13 Sunflower Avenue. The caller stated that there was a burglary in progress at the building and the suspect had a gun. Police personnel responded and ascertained that the suspect was located in an office on the 1st floor by himself and he had a gun. Police personnel immediately set up an inner perimeter to contain the suspect and began to evacuate the building for the occupants safety. An outer perimeter was than established for the general public’s safety. Paramus PD requested the Bergen County SWAT Team respond to the incident. While at the scene it was ascertained that the suspect is a long time employee of Exxon and that he had arrived there to speak with one of the owners. While he was speaking to one of the owners suspect removed a hand gun from his waist band and had made threatening gestures with it. The victim physically struggled with the suspect and then quickly disengaged from the suspect and fled the office.

Communication was attempted with the suspect through the office phone line but the suspect refused to answer the phone and he eventually compromised the phone system which made this method of communication unavailable. Investigation at this time revealed that a Bergen County K-9 officer knew the suspect through interaction with him while he worked at a gas station in the Bergen County area. The BC K-9 officer was brought to the scene and he attempted to engage the suspect in conversation. The suspect did not answer back to this communication for a long time but eventually responded to this BCPD officer. A dialogue was initiated between the BCPD officer and the suspect and eventually the BCPD officer was able to convince the suspect to voluntarily surrender. The suspect surrendered with no resistance and was removed from the scene. A search of the scene produced a black semi-automatic hand gun, knife, and duct tape.

Hand gun was a Bruni Model 92  9MM (Blank Firing Weapon)
