June 25-27, 2017 in New York City, NY
NEW YORK, NY (June 2017) –Tunisia, a North African country rich with culinary history enhanced with South Mediterranean and European influences, is excited to be showcasing top quality Tunisian products at the Specialty Food Association’s Summer Fancy Food Show (SFFS) at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in New York City, taking place from June 25 – 27, 2017.
Tunisia, which first exhibited at the SFFS in 1999, is bringing attention to its land nourished with history and its distinctive food products. More than 30 Tunisian food companies are presenting a wide range of products including organic olive oil, harissa, dates, pasta and canned foods. All of the Tunisian manufacturers are approved and certified for the US market and have the required certifications and approvals (FDA, HACCP, ISO 22000, PCQI, FSMA, proper labeling, food security plans, etc.) Most products also fit specific requirements, such as ORGANIC, HALAL, VEGAN, and KOSHER.
SFFS, which is the largest marketplace for specialty food in North America, provides a forum for Tunisian food companies to reach important new markets. Attendees are welcome to visit the Tunisian booths (Level 3, Booths #500 – 525 / #601 - 617) to taste and learn about distinct Tunisian food products. Media representatives are also invited to attend special “Meet and Greet” sessions with the Tunisian producers from 2-4PM each day of the show.
Food processing is Tunisia’s third largest manufacturing sector. Olive Oil is a trademark of Tunisia terroir with Tunisia ranking 2nd in the world in olive oil production, just behind the European Union with an average production of approximately 200,000 tons. Its unique taste and flavor, plus health benefits allow Tunisian olive oil to attract consumers from around the world. Throughout the year 2017, Tunisian olive oil companies won many gold medals at International Olive Oil Competitions held in Japan, Greece, UK and most recently in New York.
Harissa has been an authentic creation of Tunisian cuisine for decades with an average yearly production of 60,000 fresh red peppers. It’s a spicy paste that jazzes up any meal. Tunisian Harissa is a natural product of plant origin made exclusively from fresh pepper, ground garlic and spices. Tunisia developed the “Food Quality Label Tunisia” for harissa in 2014. This was achieved by the Ministry of Industry and Trade in collaboration with the Tunisian Canned Food Industries Group (GICA) and UNIDO-SECO program. Harissa, identified by the “food quality label logo” must comply with strict requirements, such as the authenticity of the recipe and the freshness of ingredients.
Tunisia ranks first as a world exporter of dates, which have an exquisite taste, sweet texture and translucent form giving them an unparalleled quality and exotic flavor. Canned foods are a main part of Tunisia’s agri-food industry. Since the early 1900s, tinned foods have made great advances in the manufacturing processes. Officially established in 1999, Organic Agriculture has also been a pillar in Tunisia’s produce production and agribusiness exports.
Tunisia at SFFS 2017 is sponsored by Tunisia Export (CEPEX), Tunisian Olive Oil (PACKTEC), The Tunisian Canned Food Industries Group (GICA), Pampat (UNIDO_SECO), USAID Business Reform & Competitiveness Project (BRCP), and The Tunisian American Young Professionals (TAYP).
