Did you know that when you contribute blood, whole or platelets, at Community Blood Services that you and your blood go through many life saving processes?

When you visit the Blood Bank at 970 Linwood Avenue in Paramus or their facility in Goshen, NY, or for that matter have one of their Bloodmobiles visit your premises, they not only take down your health data and check your blood pressure, cholesterol and pulse, your blood is tested for viral diseases such as HIV, AIDS, hepatitis and social diseases such as venereal contacts.

All of these costly procedures are done to protect you and the recipient. There is no co-pay, Medicare, Medicaid or other lengthy paperwork to fill out. All it costs you is the donation of lifesaving blood or platelets. . Not only that, but they also give you refreshments when you finish. These are offered to you by volunteers, another avenue of service where you can help if you can?t give blood. Donors leave there with a wonderful feeling of fulfillment.

Community Blood Services does a lot of good in many areas of blood delivery. Not only do they service many regional hospitals, but their lifesaving techniques are used for children as well.

One in particular, Kimberly, a cute little young lady, needs blood regularly to survive. We met Kimberly at a Paramus Rotary meeting where the entire group got up and created a song for her. Kimberly is so adorable, that the Rotarians put their heart, soul and tears into this presentation. There was hardly a dry eye when the song was finished.

All blood goes through a strict procedure to make sure that it is kept pure. The premises have freezers, refrigeration and motion machines to satisfy the needs for the various forms of blood taken and divided. There are red blood cells, plasma, platelets just to name a few. Each requires special handling. In addition, they are assigned barcodes and classified according to A, AB, B and O, RH ? and RH +.

If you would like to have that feeling of having done some good, call 201 251 3703 to either donate blood, plasma or platelets. To volunteer for one of their services call 201 444-3900 ext.1606. They will be delighted to hear from you.
